Research by the Numbers: The Power of Data to Transform Individualized Medicine

Crunching billions of data points requires high-performance computers and people who can run them—like Arjun Athreya. A third-year Ph.D. candidate in Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign (UIUC), Arjun is supporting pharmacogenomics research at the Mayo Clinic for Individualized Medicine this summer through an institutional partnership that brings together top thinkers in technology and medicine.

White House: Advancing U.S. Leadership in High-Performance Computing

In July 2015, President Obama issued an Executive Order establishing the National Strategic Computing Initiative (NSCI) to ensure that the United States continues leading in this field over the coming decades. Industry members pay a membership fee of $50,000 for one Industrial Advisory Board seat.

Industrial Advisory Board (IAB) Meetings

An Industrial Advisory Board (IAB) will be established to facilitate industry partnerships and to advise the center on all aspects of operations. This will include strategic planning and research assessment. One of the primary roles of the IAB will be to help ensure that the research being conducted is in line with industry objectives. IAB meetings are held twice a year to share the research conducted at the universities and to collect feedback and research needs from the industries.
